This year featuring music by
Mavis Staples
For over 40 years, Mavis Staples has blazed a rhythm and blues trail while still retaining her gospel roots. Her family group, the Staples Singers, acquired the moniker “God’s Greatest Hitmakers” in the 1950s and became the spiritual and musical voice of the civil rights movement. Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and one of VH1’s “100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll.” Nominated for a Grammy Award with Bob Dylan in 2003, she has put out eleven albums and also recorded with the likes of Ray Charles, Dr. John, George Jones, and Natalie Merchant. In 2007, she was awarded the Americana Music Association's "Spirit of Americana" award in Nashville, Tennessee.
